KARAMANOS, GARCIA CAPTURE RIDING TRIPLES

By Nick Hahn

Not to be outdone by Colonial newcomer James Lopez’s opening day riding triple, veterans Horatio Karamanos and Luis Garcia responded with hat tricks of their own.  The perennial leading jockeys at Colonial Downs gathered their wins on a warm Tuesday evening.

With temperature relief expected to arrive Wednesday post time returns to its regular time of 5:00 PM.

Garcia’s trips to the winner’s circle were aboard Nan’s Real Love, What Will Be and Quaise.   In the 6th race on the outer turf, Garcia provided a masterful “clock in head” ride with Quaise at 11-1 setting the pace and holding off the favorite, Carolina Wolf.  In the third, Garcia delivered Nan’s Real Love by over 9 lengths as Virginia Hero and Spirit of Steele played horse pong coming out of the turn, bumping several times in the stretch.

Karamanos’ wins on Belle’s Broker, Top Time and Chasing the Prize exhibited wins in closing, stalking and frontrunning form, on the turf and dirt.

In Colonial’s opener, Lord Rafa was alone within the shadow of the wire we he broke down with jockey Gustavo Larrosa aboard.    Elude inherited the lead and carried it across the wire.

No immediate status on the condition of Larrosa was available at the time of this report.

The $60,000 John D. Marsh stakes on Saturday has a field of seven and the $60,000 Oakley on Sunday has a field of nine.

ADRIANO MOVES TO MOTT’S BARN

On Wednesday, trainer Graham Motion learned that Adriano was being shipped out of his stable to Bill Mott.  On Thursday morning the A.P. Indy colt was on his way to New York.

Adriano captured the Lane’s End on the synthetic surface at Turfway Park and two wins on the turf.  The Courtlandt Farms colt has not faired as well on the dirt finishing 19th in the Kentucky Derby and 9th in the Fountain of Youth.  As of Belmont Stakes weekend, jockey Edgar Prado who delivered the Lane’s End win was expected to ride Adriano in the Virginia Derby.  Mott and Prado teamed up twice to win with Orchard Park (2002) and Silver Tree (2003) for owner Peter Vegso.

DREAMING OF ANNA STAYS AT CHURCHILL FOR THE MINT JULEP

Mentioned a few weeks ago as returning to Colonial Downs for the All Along, Dreaming of Anna now is entered in the Early Times Mint Julep at Churchill Downs Saturday, effectively ending a run of major stakes wins at Colonial Downs over the last two seasons.  In the wooded arena, Dreaming of Anna won the Tippett Stakes as a 2-year old, the Virginia Oaks at 3 and was nominated to the All Along Stakes at 4.

ALLEN AND KARAMANOS SLAM FOUR WINS

The perennial leaders in the jockey and training standings teamed up for three wins and independently gathered a fourth Wednesday evening at Colonial Downs.  Horatio Karamanos delivered the opening double with Got the Spirit for trainer John Boniface and Roseville Run for Ferris Allen.  Allen then saddled Virginia-bred Triplekin for Chris Gibbs who delivered a VA-Bred double bonus check to owner Gillian Gordon-Moore.  Allen and “Special K” won with another Virginia-bred Mount Weather in the fifth for Albert Coppola.

Trainer Michael Pino, jockey Luis Garcia and owner David Ross won the closing double with Rolls Ross and Invisible Jazz.
